Viagra (Sildenafil) is a prescription medication best known for treating erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. Under the brand name Revatio, it also helps manage pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) by relaxing blood vessels in the lungs.
Uses
- Erectile Dysfunction (ED): Helps men achieve and maintain an erection when sexually stimulated.
- Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH): Widens lung blood vessels to improve exercise capacity.
How It Works
Viagra blocks the PDE5 enzyme, which raises levels of cGMP in smooth muscle cells. This causes blood vessels to relax and widen, boosting blood flow to the penis for an erection and to the lungs for PAH relief.
Dosage & Administration
- Form: Oral tablets in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg doses.
- ED: Start with 50 mg about one hour before activity. Adjust between 25–100 mg as needed. Do not exceed one dose per day.
- PAH (Revatio): Taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Food: Can be taken with or without food. High-fat meals may delay effect.
Side Effects
- Common: Headache, flushing, indigestion, nasal congestion, dizziness.
- Serious: Priapism (painful erection > 4 hours), sudden vision/hearing loss, chest pain. Seek immediate medical care if any serious symptoms occur.
Warnings & Precautions
- Drug Interactions: Never combine with nitrates or certain blood pressure drugs—this can dangerously lower blood pressure.
- Health Conditions: Use with caution if you have heart, liver, or kidney problems. Not suitable if sexual activity is inadvisable.
- Other: Requires sexual stimulation to work. Avoid excessive alcohol, which can reduce effectiveness and increase side effects.
