Sildenafil is a widely used generic medication primarily prescribed for erectile dysfunction (ED) in men and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It improves blood flow to specific areas, supporting sexual function and easing pressure in lung vessels.
Uses
- Erectile Dysfunction (ED): Helps men achieve and maintain an erection during sexual stimulation.
- Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH): Relaxes lung blood vessels to reduce pressure and improve physical activity.
How It Works
Sildenafil inhibits phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), boosting levels of cyclic GMP (cGMP). This causes smooth muscle relaxation and enhanced blood flow in targeted areas like the penis and lungs.
Dosage & Administration
- ED: Usually 50 mg, taken 30–60 minutes before intercourse. Max dose: 100 mg, once daily.
- PAH: Typically 5–20 mg, taken three times daily.
Take orally, ideally on an empty stomach or with a light meal.
Side Effects
- Common: Headache, flushing, upset stomach, nasal congestion, dizziness, vision changes.
- Serious: Priapism, sudden hearing/vision loss, chest pain, arrhythmias. Seek immediate care if these occur.
Warnings & Precautions
Avoid use with nitrates, certain heart conditions, or recent stroke. Use lower doses in elderly or those with liver/kidney issues. Not for women during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
